The product of a lifetime of research and reflection, Transcending Fear is Brian Germain's most important work. The book addresses the most significant challenge of human kind to date the process of recognizing and moving beyond fear. In an age in which fear has literally brought our world to the brink of destruction, understanding why we contract in fear and how we can go beyond this instinctive reaction is essential for our survival as a species.

As a World Champion skydiver, test pilot and psychologist, Brian Germain offers a unique personalized perspective on the phenomenon of fear. Reflecting on his many intense experiences with fear, Brian sorts through the most current psychology research on fear, and presents the ways to de-escalate the emotional response in provocative situations.

The fundamental premise of the book is simple Fear makes us stupid. If we are to transcend the limitations imposed by a contracted perspective, we must develop our ability to remain calm. Specific methods for relaxing in dangerous situations are covered in detail, as well as scientific evidence to support the reasons for this unusual and powerful approach to dealing with fear.

I started off liking this but quickly changed my tune. First off, this is not a skydiving book like some would lead to believe. What I didn't like is that this is mostly a philosophical book where the author rants on and on about philosophical fear and his own theories on how to conquer them. It has a little bit of a hippie "zen" flavor to it as well. (positive thought generates positive energy type of BS) A major concept in the book is clearing your mind to a meditative state where you think and feel nothing, hence removing the fear. Most of us experiencing fear as a result of doing some dangerous or extreme activity would like to actually remember and enjoy the activity rather than be oblivious to it simply to remove our fears. That's why we're doing it in the first place! The worse part is as the book progresses, he ends up repeating the same concepts over and over and over and over and over... (get the point?) Very difficult to finish.

Transcending Fear The Doorway to Freedom edition by Brian Germain Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I bought this when I started to train to get my skydiving license. Great book
Regardless of your opinion, if you are are a true skydiver, you will be happy with this read.
I've never spent so much time re-reading words or entire paragraphs like I did with this book. I've never highlighted so many paragraphs and/or sent them to friends via texts. I really do feel this book is amazing and it can actually make a change in anyone who gives it a chance.
I loved it and I can see that I am starting to change (from small things like going down on a steep hill to skydiving).

Thanks Brian for a great book!
What an engaging, useful, insightful book. Loved, loved, loved it. I used to skydive so much of the content was relevant to me, but you do not have to be a skydiver to find enormous value in this book. There is actually very few skydiving references.

It is an absolute must read for anyone participating in extreme sports or just for life in general - we ALL have fears of some sort at some point... stage fright, heights, spiders, flying... This book really helps one embrace fear and use it as a tool to become a better more enlightened human being. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
One of the best and most insightful books I've ever read. The writing is a bit disorganized...it's kind of like listening to your really drunk or high buddy tell you about the rock opera he's going to write, but in this case your buddy really has a kick a** opera in his head, he's just too high to explain it coherently.

What I mean is that this guy really has a handle on what fear is and how to conquer it. He's the type of person I would absolutely trust with my life as a skydiving instructor, and I could easily count on him as a mentor or sensei when it comes to dealing with needless fears...

But the book seems to wander a bit...with a good editor the message could be a lot clearer and more coherent. It almost seems like a transcript of a seminar, like Frogs Into Princes. Not super organized or well structured, but man, the ideas and concepts are fantastic.

No matter what, read it. Live by it. Learning to manage fear is what makes the difference between regular people and the people everyone elevates as extraordinary. The key to living your life FOR REAL is in this book. Get it. Now.
I bought this hoping to find that magic ingredient to "get out the door " (at 12,000 feet altitude)This is the second time I've read something from this author and again I'm left in bewilderment. His writing style is very strange, (like riding on a tilt-a whirl) So finding the gems is a bit tedious(think panning for gold by hand;while riding the tilt-a-whirl) I commend Brian for 1.getting out of the door, and 2.trying to write a book. However, I think he could use the help of a professional writer or co-author to get his point across more clearly.
Fast read, lots of empty space and big fonts. The overall information is good and very intriguing. It also makes you think about your life and how you handle day to day situations. Only thing I didn't like was the language/ writing style. Sometimes I felt like I was reading in circles as much of the same things were repeated (though this could have been intentional in order for the reader to remember the content). Instead of paragraph after paragraph of writing, the book is broken into many small subsections. I'm not sure how I feel about this, it does not flow as well as it would if he were forced to transition between points more smoothly, however it does separate ideas and keep things organized. I wish there would have been more personal stories to give a break from the sermon-giving/priest-like way the book is written.

Overall, a quick read, could have been written better, content is worth knowing and learning about and I feel I can trust what is written due to the extensive list of references at the back. Worth the money and would recommend to anyone.
