I had read the D. Alan Johnson book, Arauca: A Novel of Colombia, and couldn't wait to read another of his works. I was definitely not disappointed! This is another top notch novel, expertly written by a man who has been there; done that. The only bad part was that it had to end, now I'm looking forward to the next one.Product details

Fun and fast paced action story based in Africa, its got intrigue, a great pace and its so real it seems like it could have happened. This book should be made into a movie.
First of all, what a fantastic book. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.
I would highly recommend the novel to any adventure seeking type or anyone looking for a gripping story.
There is a an entire world to be discovered about the riches of Africa and the fight to control it's most valuable resource. D. Alan Johnson does a great job of mixing current events into a believable tale of the control over the Tantalum Mines. As a reader that was unfamiliar with the current events in Africa, I found this book not only entertaining, but enlightening as well. All major players around the world are manipulating pawns in Africa so as to control these valuable mines. A good dose of suspense is weaved into Asgaard, with aviation playing a major role. A real working knowledge of aviation in covert ops is very apparent here, nice work.
Asgaard wasn't written by someone who dreamed up a great tale. It was written by someone who really knows the inner workings of the power struggles occurring in Africa. D. Alan Johnson's background in the military and as a contractor have definitely led to a book that is more than just a novel. This book reads excellent and will leave you wanting to know more about the inner workings of covert operations and how they really control the outcome of small wars around the world.
I have already purchased other books by D. Alan Johnson and look forward to watching his novels make their way into the mainstream.
I generally do not read fiction. But I do read history, and an historical fiction where I can check out locations, events, and persons is sometimes sufficient bait to hook me into a read. Asgaard set the hook. I wore out my “Google Earth” and my “Wikipedia” links checking out locations, events, and persons.
The author, D. Alan Johnson, is intriguing himself. If he writes from personal experience or from the experience of contract pilots that he knew, and he does, then those historical stories that he tells through the veil of fiction should be, and are, an enjoyable way to spend an evening or two. I got hold of his paper back Asgaard. I treasure sleep, but his book deprived me of some. Perhaps there should be printed on the cover some U. S. Surgeon General’s warning that reading this may be injurious to your health.
I will not disclose here the plot of this book. That appears in other reviews. Suffice it to say that one of the book’s characters is a pilot. The author’s descriptions of the aviation component of the story are sufficient to convey to a non-pilot the non-technical aspects of what is involved in the equipment and operation of aircraft included in the story without leaving those knowledgeable in aviation with the feeling that the author is writing down to them. That is not an easy or prolific writing skill. The author achieves a pleasant balance in his style.
This book’s setting is in the Congo and its current geographic configurations and territories. War torn, who knows what those configurations will be in the future. Ambrose Bierce once wrote that “War is God's way of teaching Americans geography.” This book will teach a little geography of Africa in 2009. The Congolese Civil Wars, which began in 1996, ultimately involved nine African nations, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers and twenty armed groups, and resulted in the deaths of 5.4 million people. The greatest death loss since World War II.
I enjoyed the book enough that I downloaded to read the author’s two previous works of fiction Arauca A Novel of Colombia and The Grace Bay Agreement. In fact, I enjoyed the author’s writing style enough that I also downloaded to read his non-fiction accomplishments Get a Job From the Inside Out and Secrets of Buying and Selling Used Equipment. If an author can span such diverse genre, then I will spend some time with him. I do not believe that even Hemingway ever took on the task of writing about used equipment, although we know now that Cuba is proliferate with at least old American cars.
