The House on 4th Street Connie Wesala 9781508989165 Books

When I was a little girl, I was fascinated by the pull-down step ladder that led to my grandmother's attic. In the corner was a trunk we were not allowed to touch as it belonged to my grandfather's first wife who died in childbirth. "The House on 4th Street," captured me from the beginning with the main character's discovery of a trunk in the attic of her childhood home. The author, Connie Wesala, takes readers through a well-written and believable journey as the main character learns more about the generations associated with the trunk's contents and the house where the trunk was found.

The House on 4th Street Connie Wesala 9781508989165 Books Reviews

The House on 4th Street brings together all the emotion of the author's women characters and their lives from the early railroad days in Oklahoma, to present day. The book captivates all the struggles women have faced throughout these time periods. I recommend the book to anyone that loves historical fiction.
Wesala has put together an intriguing tale spanning decades. Each story in the past has a connection with the main character's story set in the present. The author did an excellent job in her research, and in bringing the characters to life.. Well-done.
Too disjointed and hard to keep up. I realize it was several short stories put into a book nut it should have flowed better. I also thought it would be more about Edmond and it was not about the town.
Connie's characters are wonderful. You feel their pain, their happiness, you root for them. Her descriptions of the houses, the locations the landscaping make you feel like you are there. I did not want to put the book down. It was truly well written and a must read. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You will be happy you did.
A friend recommended this book to me and I'm so glad she did!  The stories of several strong, interesting women ranging from the late 1800's to present day are tied together by the contents of a trunk in a home in Oklahoma.  Each story is riveting-- truly a good read.
Hard to believe this is Connie's first novel. The characters come to life and evoke many emotions as you read their stories. Very easy to connect the patterns as woven into this narrative. I especially enjoyed the historical details and background of Edmond, Oklahoma, where I attended college. I could not put the book down once I started reading it. I highly recommend The House on 4th Street if you enjoy interesting characters, intrigue, family dynamics and glimpses of American history. The reader will experience a full range of emotions as each story unfolds.
Connie's combination of history and fiction come together in a way that every reader will relate to in one way or another. The story moves from the present to the past and the past to the present throughout the chapters, yet I was able to remember names and faces without re-reading prior chapters. The characters become very real. Constantly evolving emotions flow from the pages. I read the entire book on over the weekend. Not because it was a short novel, but because I had a hard time walking away from the next chapter. If I had to identify a similar novel it would easily be "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. I give it a rare five stars.
